Pics shows: The girls cuddling with the cows; A woman who saved three cows from slaughter now uses the animals for cuddling workshops aimed at treating stress. Visitors to the Gisiberg farm in the town of Tenniken, in the northern Swiss canton of Basel-Landschaft, can now lie next to the cows and cuddle them. Sibylle Zwygert, 25, a veterinary student and farmer’s daughters, says the trend for cuddling cows started in the Netherlands. She explains that it is intended to help people slow down with life and help them relax. Zwygert has trained the three three-and-a-half-year-old Jersey cows named Svea, Sven and Svenja to receive guests for cuddling. Shortly after their birth the cattle were due to be slaughtered, since the two infertile females and one bull were useless for the dairy business. But Sibylle Zwygart was able to save the animals at the last minute. She said: "But I had to promise my father that the three would make enough money to cover the costs of their maintenance." She quickly came up with the idea of offering cow-cuddling workshops. Zwygert said: "Cows are particularly suitable for cuddling, as they like body contact and are quiet animals. Through their snugness, they make sure that people in their vicinity are also relaxing." Visitors pay 50 CHF (40 GBP) to come and cuddle the cows. First, visitors get a small theoretical briefing and learn to get to know their cow while cleaning the animal. Zwygert said: "As soon as there is mutual trust, there can be cuddles." The whole workshop takes around two hours and is suitable for children from the age of seven onwards. Mario Becker, an animal behaviour expert who advises farmers, is not fully convinced by Zwygart's offer. He said: "Cows are escape animals and not cuddly animals. To cuddle with people is not a natural need of the cows." Becker said that while it is true that cows are quiet animals and like body contact, he said it should always be noted "that the animal decides by itself to
